Even More About Me…
What first drew you to becoming a DJ? What was that initial spark?
Two things combined to lead my being bitten by the DJ bug. I first discovered and fell in love with electronic music while studying abroad in Spain in high school. Then, at my first college party, the DJ serendipitously offered to teach me his trade. The more I learned about new music & the more I was able to play this music at my first gigs, the harder it became to stop!
How does it feel when you see people connecting and dancing to the music you're playing?
When I notice my client and their audience authentically connecting with each other through the music, I often get a bittersweet feeling. It’s like seeing your child off on their first day of school. I’m both happy that I’ve helped to create a memorable moment, and sad that this moment in time will come and go.
What's the most rewarding aspect of being a private event DJ?
Weddings & private events have a unique power to be curated in a way that public events can’t fully realize. They reflect a chapter in the story of the life of a person, a couple, a group, or a community in a relevant & meaningful way.
When you're at your best during an event, what are you doing and why does it matter?
When people put down their phones & notice each other vibing to the same music, I know that I’ve done my job. As a Brooklyn private event DJ, this can be an especially tough job! Life can feel so short, and invariably has its highs and lows for everyone. It is essential to be present when the occasion is asking you to be.
How do you hope to impact people's most important celebrations?
I have found that I get the best reviews when I approach a client’s event as a semi-official member of the event planning team. Even for private events without event planners or day-of coordinators, when I approach the occasion with a holistic, planner’s mindset, I am able to better understand my client’s perspective.
What makes you unique as a DJ?
I as someone who has lived in four countries and speaks four languages, I’ve found that I understand multicultural private events. I have also DJed bilingual weddings and received positive feedback for my ability to compose diverse music playlists. I have spent my life code-switching and have learned how to truly listen to people of all walks of life. If I don’t speak the language, I rely on the universal language of music to make my client's event truly unique!
